With more than 360 participants, more than 1 million people reached and nearly 7 million online impressions generated, this week’s Leadership Chat on “Leading with Feelings and Passion” was lively, to say the least!
Thanks to the thought-provoking preparatory blog post entitled, “Control Your Feelings – Don’t Express Them” by Dan Rockwell, our Guest Host for the evening, and Steve Woodruff’s prep post labeled, “Feeling Like a Leader,” the Leadership Chat Community came prepared for an emotional discussion. And that’s just what we had, yet in a very insightful, eye-opening way.
The Role of Experiences and Backgrounds
One of the many aspects of Leadership Chat that I simply adore is the diversity in the age, experiences, background, geography and perspectives of the members of our Community. If you read through the transcript from Leadership Chat, you’ll see how this plays into the very different belief systems about leading with feelings, emotions and passion that came to light during the conversation. This was genuinely a smart, thoughtful chat with a lot of insights and suggestions that made me think differently and bigger.
What Made Me Passionate
I have such genuine respect for everyone who was courageous enough to jump into the discussion and share their real feelings! It’s not easy to do, especially given the stereotypes and misconceptions that are still at play to some degree when we ask if leaders should bring feelings and passion to work.
But I have a few favorite tweets from the conversation that I’d like to highlight for you here; tweets that I felt passionate about and that made me smile. Please let me know if they resonate with you:
On Leading with Feelings and Emotion:
@Leadershipfreak: Leading w/feeling = being emotionally available & responsive in the moment
@JamesWillmarth: Leading with feeling is leading with an understanding of the role of feelings (emotion), yours and your team’s
@Leadershipfreak: Ignite the passion of others by being selflessly passionate about them

I love “leading with empathy…can be good business.” I’ve already proven that. It retains people, cuts down on recruiting and hiring costs, produces a stronger work staff, and can be a great public relations thing.
Oh, and one more thing. I love getting those phone calls and e-mails from people I’ve taken the time to mentor in the past. When they remember how I led with empathy and passion, it makes me happy.
Henry,
You bring up such a great reminder that when we lead, it’s not just for the present. A real leader is developing their people, and the benefits of that will ripple for many years to come. How wonderful for you to be receiving those phone calls and emails!
If you LOVE what do, then you should LOVE your subjects or those you lead as well!
