First things first: it’s been six months since I last penned a blog post.  I didn’t exactly fall off the face of the earth; rather, I focused night and day on a start-up. And while we’re not quite ready to announce a full launch, the power of the new company is rooted in the lesson I learned and revealed in my last blog post: “We are all more powerful when we awaken every aspect of ourselves – masculine as well as feminine, head as well as heart – and live our lives as our full, whole, True Selves. Not only do we become more powerful, but we open the door to the possibility of expanding our lives in the most unexpected ways…

Stay tuned for exciting news about this new company, coming very soon!

Bob BurgIn the meantime, I’m honored and thrilled to have my friend Bob Burg guest posting this week on a topic that fully resonates with me. It’s the idea that the expectation you set going into an interaction with someone is exceptionally powerful. Bob refers to it as Positive Expectation and I often talk about it as appealing to others’ Higher Selves. It changes our own mindset and energy, which has a tremendous impact on the outcome of our conversations and business dealings with others.

This is one of the many brilliant lessons in Bob’s new book, “Adversaries Into Allies: Win People Over Without Manipulation or Coercion” available now on Amazon. I highly recommend it for any situation where you are looking to persuade others to partner with you, or to simply “be on your side!” This is a book you’ll want to read and refer to often! So without further ado…presenting just a few of the many distinguished insights from my friend Bob Burg:

Adversaries into AlliesPositive Expectation and Ultimate Influence
By Bob Burg

“Expecting someone to be helpful doesn’t change them, it changes you.  And that is what changes them.”

On a very basic level, influence can be defined as the ability to move a person or persons to a desired action, usually within the context of a specific goal. However, when accomplished correctly, this has nothing to do with cajoling, pushing or manipulating others. It does mean that you can consistently obtain satisfaction and reach your goals while building others; touching their lives in a very positive, value-based way.

You’re about to share your product or service with a prospect known to be a real bear. Or, you’re about to ask the cranky-looking customer service representative to exchange an item you don’t like but without a receipt. Or it could be any situation where you need to turn a potential “adversary” into an ally.

Both for long-term and immediate results, act towards that person believing they’re going to want to give you exactly what you desire.

No, we’re not talking about hocus-pocus or “magical thinking!!”

What happens is that, when you predetermine someone’s attitude or action in your own mind as being positive and helpful, you yourself take on a corresponding attitude. That is the key! Yes, you change, which transfers directly into him or her changing their original attitude and acting in the appropriate solution-oriented manner.

After all, how can he not like someone who likes him so much and expects from him only the best?

Apply this consistently. It will change the results you usually get and you’ll find this makes your actions much more productive and your life a lot less stressful!

You’re on your way to attaining Ultimate Influence.
